Dyson launches its first wearable technology and it looks futuristic

Pure air and high-quality audio delivered to you on-the-go

If you thought Dyson was synonymous with vacuum cleaners and air purifiers you would be right. But with the launch of its first wearable technology, they have waded into an entirely new domain. And it’s pretty cool.

The Dyson Zone air-purifying Bluetooth headphones is a set of noise-cancelling, high fidelity over-ear headphones which deliver immersive sound to the ears and purified airflow to the nose and mouth all at the same time.

It seems timely, after this nation (if not the world) has emerged from many, many months behind masks but design of the latest Dyson product goes back much further than the pandemic and its requirement that we clear the air to reduce transmission.

The Zone, created by a company with more than three decades in the business as an expertise on airflow and filtration, is the culmination of nearly a decade of air quality research and development — perhaps a perfect accessory for the city-dweller who wants to combat urban air quality issues and noise pollution.

“Air pollution is a global problem – it affects us everywhere we go. In our homes, at school, at work and as we travel, whether on foot, on a bike or by public or private transport,” said chief engineer, Jake Dyson. “The Dyson Zone purifies the air you breathe on the move. And unlike face masks, it delivers a plume of fresh air without touching your face, using high-performance filters and two miniaturized air pumps.”

Six years and 500 prototypes

How it works: Tiny compressors in each ear cup draw air through the dual-layer filters and direct two streams of purified air to the wearer’s nose and mouth via a non-contact visor.

The Dyson Zone simultaneously delivers “rich, immersive audio” and thus a buffer against city noise with its advanced active noise-cancelling technology.

Engineers put a lot of effort into providing the technology not only delivers purified air wherever you go and great sound but also makes comfort a top priority, too.

“Taking inspiration from the shape and design of a horse’s saddle, the Dyson Zone is engineered to distribute weight over the sides of the head rather than on the top. A saddle typically curves over the horse’s spine distributing the load through contact with the areas left and right of the backbone – a format used for the central cushion on the headband,” the company states.

They ain’t pretty

But welcome to the future, we suppose.

But the way they work is beautiful and impressively futuristic, only it’s now.

Who imagine strapping ear phones on and through a piece that rests in front of, but not on, your face delivering up to five liters of clean air a second? We didn’t certainly.

Obviously, this is ideal for people living in larger centers or traveling to them rather than some Canadians who enjoy locales with much more open space and fresh air. But because you have the option to use them as ear phones only, perhaps they are an added feature to use as needed.

Then again, in parts of Canada there seems to be the annual forest fires that erupt and take down air quality with it.

And StatsCan reports that air pollution is a huge health concern with Health Canada blames it for 15,300 premature deaths per year as well as leading to millions of people suffering from asthma symptoms and even acute respiratory issues..

Makes sense, perhaps, that higher death counts are seen in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta, where populations are the greatest, while some of the lowest are in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

Some specs:

  • Electrostatic filtration captures 99 per cent of particle pollution as small as 0.1 microns. That includes dust, pollen and bacteria
  • Potassium-enriched carbon filter captures city gases like NO2, SO2 and O3
  • Contact-free air delivery visor channels two streams of purified air to the nose and mouth, engineered specifically for usage outdoors and in crosswinds
  • Two motors sit in each ear cup
  • Highest level of active noise cancellation to provide a rich, immersive audio experience
  • Conversation mode activates when you dip the visor – automatically turning off the purification to conserve battery power and amplify conversation
  • Can be used as earphones alone and if a situation requires mask, an attachment provides a full seal

Dyson already has a legit enviable track record with its other products, so we trust this will be superbly designed. We suspect its popularity will depend on the price to some degree. Not everyone can afford to buy into a good idea.

It will be available in the US later this year and we are told some time this year or 2023 in Canada but we don’t know how much it will cost to buy a Zone.

Dyson didn’t announce a price yet but word on the street (in various reports from other media outlets and consumer organizations) puts these babies at somewhere in the range of $800 to $1,600.
