She left Evanston Hospital to pursue a master’s degree (MSN) at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Jan was also certified as a nurse-midwife and worked as a Women’s Health Practitioner for a year at North Care in Evanston, IL. In her final career move, she put her background to work in a variety of managerial roles at Baxter-Travenol Laboratories, Inc., a major medical products company. Much of her work was related to quality assurance. Several of her former employees describe Jan as the best boss
they ever had.
Janet was a very friendly, warm, generous, kind, and joyful person. Her radiant personality and beautiful smile could light up a room. She loved family gatherings, her school reunions, and celebrates all holidays with a festive flair, including colorful socks.
She loved to travel, garden, ski, read, and learn and continued to take courses on many topics ranging from art and writing to upholstery repair, making longtime friends in the process. Her book group was a favorite involvement. Family visits were the priority for holidays, long seasonal weekends, and summer vacations usually in MI and WI, with many stays at her rustic, camp on the Menominee River, close to her hometown. Her three frisky and loving Welsh Terrier dogs…one at a time…..afforded Jan great fun and exercise, for many years.
As an accomplished and enthusiastic skier, she embraced the move to New England and its proximity to New Hampshire’s White Mountains, where she skied often with her husband. When his family and relatives introduced her to the fun and challenges of sailing, she learned quickly and enjoyed the adventures.
Janet is survived by her husband David. The youngest of four daughters, this beloved “baby sister” is also survived by her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Anderson, her husband Dennis “Denny” Anderson, and her brother-in-law, Bruce Hedlund. In addition to her many surviving friends and relatives, she established long and cherished relationships with her sisters’ children: Lisa (Don) Walla; Laurie (Jim) Caple; Lynn (Tom) Petroff; Susan (Mike) Otto; Mike (Janel) Major; Pam (Dan) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her loving sisters, Gerri Hedlund and Rita Major. Sadly, she also lost sister Gerri’s children: Terri Jo Carlson and David Carlson.
